"Avulekile Amasango" sung by Ishmael
Avulekile Amasango is a traditional South African gospel song. I learned it while living in South Africa. Some nights everyone on the compound would get together and we’d teach each other songs. The first time I heard this song, the children living there sang it for us, and under the Southern stars it sounded unearthly and impossibly beautiful. This version is a bit different from the way the children sang it for us that night (and many other nights), but it’s still beautiful, and it still reminds me of South Africa.
Translation: “The gates are open, we are crossing over the Jordan.”
